anaesthetist / cardiologist

Mr McCann described the last time he saw her - at 9.05pm as he checked on his daughter as she lay sleeping - before returning to the tapas bar to carry on with his evening meal.

Speaking about Madeleine's upbringing, Kate, a 39-year-old GP, told Portugal's Flash! magazine: "She cried practically for 18 hours a day. I had to permanently carry her around."

Although the arrival of the twins Sean and Amelie shook up Madeleine's life, she accepted them very well, said Kate.

GM – She is always very active, she loves to organise everything, she is very good at role-playing games. In the hotel creche, she liked to organise things. For her age, her vocabulary is very good, better than mine! She understands lots of things, she picks things up quickly, she is very insightful."

Witness states that as she was an intelligent child, timid at first contact, and who later felt more comfortable, was a child who conversed normally for her age, and was of a calm demeanour. She adds that it was usual for Madeleine to be called "Maddy", as this is how she [Madeleine] presented herself to the witness.

When questioned, she replies that the little girl was discreet and shy. She says that she was a very pretty girl, however she did not stand out because of this.

"Madeleine has the first three Harry Potter books and first three DVDs. Like most other children the world over, she loves the stories."

She says: "As I put her to bed, she smiled at me and said, 'Mummy I've had the best day ever. I'm having lots and lots of fun'."

Asked about the last time she saw Madeleine, she said: "She was very happy and very loving and I know Madeleine was very happy with her life. She is special."

Date of marriage: 1998
Education: Notre Dame Catholic High School, Everton Valley, Liverpool (11-18 years)

Kate studied medicine at the University of Dundee, in Scotland. She initially specialised in gynaecology but later changed to become an .
She first met husband Gerry McCann at the Western Infirmary in Glasgow, Scotland.
It is reported that she made the decision to work as a GP because the hours would be more suitable and flexible to arrange around a family.
It was after she returned to the apartment at 10.00pm that Madeleine was discovered missing. Like virtually everything in the case, there has been much debate and denial about what was actually said when she raised the alarm. Common belief is that she shouted 'They've taken her' and this has caused much debate over why she chose those particular words and who 'They' could be.

Valerie Armstrong, landlady of Rothley's Royal Oak pub, where the McCanns sometimes go for lunch or dinner, said: "They are lovely, gentle, caring people." She said that they would let only their nanny or relatives babysit the children, and chose the Mark Warner resort precisely because they thought that it was safe.

Dr Gerry McCann, a lecturer in sports medicine at the Centre for Exercise Science and Medicine at Glasgow University, said the list of banned substances was so comprehensive that it was highly unlikely that an athlete could take a legal substance, but register a positive result in a doping test.
